Mayor Weinberger, Burlington Electric Department, VGS, UVM Medical Center, Ever-Green Energy Announce Another Milestone Step Forward for District Energy System
Vermont Business Magazine Mayor Miro Weinberger, Burlington Electric Department (BED), VGS, University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC), Ever-Green Energy, and the Burlington District Energy System (BURDES) Committee, a group of interested local citizens, today announced another milestone step forward to Phase 3 of an updated district energy system (DES) project.
Phase 3 marks the first time that the City, BED, VGS, and UVMMC have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI), in which they agree to a three- to six-month scope of work that will determine whether the DES project will advance to the final permitting, financing, and construction phases.

Burlington, Vermont has sourced 100% of its energy from renewables since 2014. In 2018, the city implemented a Net Zero Energy Plan to eliminate all fossil fuel use in its heating and ground transportation by 2030. A program that provides incentives for residents and businesses to switch to such renewable energy technologies has been extended.
Burlington launched its Green Stimulus Program in June 2020 with incentives for heat pumps, water heaters, electric vehicles and other renewable technologies. Vermont Business Magazine Mayor Miro Weinberger and Burlington Electric Department (BED) today jointly announced that the Burlington Green Stimulus program is working and that program incentives have been extended into 2021 and will remain available through year’s end or until funding is exhausted.
The Green Stimulus significantly increased incentives to help Burlingtonians heat their homes and power their vehicles with BED’s 100 percent renewably-sourced electricity.
