SCORES of non-medical support staff at Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary are to take strike action over a bitter pay dispute that been unresolved for more than a decade. Porters, cleaners, and switchboard staff say they have run out of patience with their employer, accusing the firm of denying them promised pay enhancements for the unsocial many routinely work. The public sector union Unison says that the workers involved were promised extra money for working nights and weekends more than a decade ago as part of an historic national NHS pay deal called Agenda for Change. It included ‘enhanced’ rates – such as time-and-a-half and double time – for working nights or weekends.

Could 2021 bring the “renaissance of the Great British Seaside Holiday”? This is the hope, and expectation, of Pete Waters, executive director of Visit East of England.
“After the end of the first lockdown last year, we saw a huge surge in holidaymakers to resorts such as Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Cromer, towns that were first made famous by the Victorian development of the rail network from the cities to the coast, and we think there’ll be a similar impact this summer,” he says.
At the same time, 61% of firms said current restrictions had caused their turnovers to fall with just 14% expected trading levels to return to pre-pandemic levels in the next 12 months.
When it comes to jobs, a net balance of 10% of businesses in the region expect to reduce staff levels over the next year, up 10 points on last month.
Their economic optimism fell dramatically by 34% to stand at -10%. Overall business confidence dipped three points to -7% as the third lockdown came into force.
The biggest falls were reported in Scotland (-32% vs -9% in December), Wales (-20% vs -1% in December) and the South West (-8% vs 5% in December). But firms reported a month-on-month increase in confidence in London (up 5% to 3%), the South East (up 7% to -4%) and North West (up 8% to -5%). Yorkshire business confidence remained steady month-on-month at -4%.
