Sylvia Ageloff and the assassination of Leon Trotsky on February 6.
On August 20, 1940, Leon Trotsky was assassinated by Stalinist agent Ramón Mercader in the Mexico City suburb of Coyoacán. Mercader’s access to the great revolutionary was made possible through his relationship with Sylvia Ageloff, a member of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP). In the aftermath of the assassination, Ageloff presented herself as an innocent victim of Mercader’s duplicity, a claim that was never challenged by the SWP.
This series of articles constitutes the first systematic investigation by the Trotskyist movement of Ageloff’s role and continues the work of the International Committee of the Fourth International’s Security and the Fourth International investigation. It is published in four parts.
More than 60 years after her death, Frida Kahlo is a rock star.
“Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Mexican Modernism” opens at the Albuquerque Museum, 2000 Mountain Road NW, on Saturday, Feb. 6.
Despite the inclusion of famed muralists Diego Rivera (Kahlo’s husband/lover/nemesis) and David Alfaro Siqueiros; and the painters María Izquierdo and Rufino Tamayo; Kahlo is the draw, the star of the show, the global icon who sold out the exhibition’s last stop in Denver.
Of about 200 works, 20 of the paintings are Kahlo’s. Her work and the bohemian image she conjured throughout her career dominate the exhibition. Visitors also can view some of her Indigenous clothing.

Vida Americana is an exhilarating, expansive and immensely satisfying exhibition at New York’s Whitney Museum. Like a great and varied feast, this is a show that one must take one’s time to fully appreciate and digest; an exhibition that includes photography, film, sculpture, charcoal sketches, colored pencil and graphite, watercolors, lithographs and oil paintings, from the easel to the epic in scale. Not only are the greatest Mexican artists of the twentieth century represented here – including Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros (‘Los Tres Grandes’) – but also many of the notable American artists who they had a profound influence on, such as Jackson Pollock, Jacob Lawrence, Marion Greenwood and Charles White, among others.
