Faster Than Sound: Falling Hard for Sasha & the Valentines

After graduating from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the five members of Sasha & the Valentines briefly dispersed. Throughout college, the quintet formed an orbit of musical projects to play university parties. Time spent apart inspired singer Sarah Addi to begin writing her own songs and developing a haunting, velvety vocal depth. I was out in Hawaii working on a farm, and all I wanted to do was play shows, remembers drummer Billy Hickey. After seeing the large impact and engagement from Willie s Birthday livestream last April, the Luck Reunion folks have sprouted a new creative endeavor – Luck Summit – one they hope starts a much-needed conversation about a topic near and dear to Willie Nelson s heart. Planting the Seed is their inaugural convention aimed at bipartisan dialogue about all things cannabis. In a statement, Nelson said, I think people need to be educated to the fact that marijuana is not a drug. Marijuana is an herb and a flower. God put it here. If He put it here and He wants it to grow, what gives the government the right to say that God is wrong?

World-Class Trombonist Andre Hayward s Spiritual Journey

Andre Hayward at the Skylark Lounge with the late Margaret Wright’s piano (Photo by David Brendan Hall) Standing onstage with saxophonist Elias Haslanger s local quintet, Andre Hayward preps for his moment. As the two men finish a harmonized riff on the bandleader s Smiley s Stairs, Hayward lifts his bell to the microphone to take the first solo. The trombonist sticks close to the melody at first, adding slight variations, before scattering flurries of notes that belie their creator s relaxed state. At the point it all threatens to veer too far outside, Hayward brings it back home, gracefully recasting the melody and setting up Haslanger s own break. Though there s no live audience, Hayward earns enthusiastic applause from his bandmates.
