A staffing shortage is causing a shakeup inside the Massachusetts State Police, according to an email the NBC10 Boston Investigators obtained from the leader of the agency.
According to the memo, 46 veteran troopers are being pulled from their specialty units and temporarily reassigned to barracks, where they ll help patrol the streets.

In his communication to troopers, Col. Christopher Mason said the department expects to lose anywhere from 200 to 250 members during 2021.
An incoming class of 172 trainees won t be able to offset all those losses after they graduate in October and begin reporting for duty next January.

“People shouldn’t be afraid to voice their political opinions or speak out against the police themselves because they fear the police are watching them,” Crockford said.
Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts Nathaniel Mendell told NBC10 Boston the technology will be used to focus on the most violent criminals. He emphasized the software makes it much easier to sift through the vast landscape of what’s already publicly available online.
“I expect it will be extremely valuable,” Mendell said. “What used to take you a week or a month might now take you a day or a few hours.”

GREENFIELD A man and woman were arrested on Federal Street early Tuesday afternoon after allegedly leading police on a vehicle pursuit in Deerfield and reaching nearly 115 mph.
Officers with the Greenfield Police Department arrested the suspects at 12:35 p.m. and they were turned over to Massachusetts State Police to be processed at the Shelburne Falls barracks. No information about the suspects’ identities was available as of 4 p.m., State Police spokesperson David Procopio said, though it is believed the man was driving the vehicle.
According to Procopio, at 11:45 a.m. a state trooper heading north on Interstate 91 tried to stop a blue SUV with Delaware plates that had been reported stolen.
