15 states reach $4 5B settlement with OxyContin-maker Purdue Pharma

New York State Team New York and 14 other states have reached a $4.5 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, potentially ending years of legal battles over the company s connection to the opioid epidemic. The major opioid settlement was revealed in a mediator s report filed late Wednesday in federal bankruptcy court in White Plains, in which the 15 states including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts supported the deal and agreed to drop their opposition to Purdue s bankruptcy. “For nearly two years, since Purdue Pharma declared bankruptcy, the company and the Sackler family have used every delay tactic possible and misused the courts all in an effort to shield their misconduct,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement Thursday.

Gypsy moths are ravaging upstate NY Will trees survive? What to know

New York State Team The historic infestation of gypsy moth caterpillars has now spread across large swaths of the Finger Lakes and North Country regions of New York, munching leaves and leaving behind countless acres of unseasonably barren trees. The outbreak of millions of fuzzy two-inch invasive insects has wreaked havoc in parts of upstate, raining down feces on hikers and endangering the tourist season as property owners fret over long-term damage to trees. But there may be reason for hope: The tree damage, in most cases, will be short-lived. The oaks, maples and other broad-leaf species of trees currently on the caterpillars’ menu are expected to regrow leaves over the summer months, experts said, though the maple syrup haul could be diminished.
