ATLANTA â Democrats in the Republican-controlled General Assembly are asking GOP Gov. Brian Kemp to add Medicaid expansion to the legislatureâs upcoming redistricting special session.
A letter dated Tuesday signed by 67 Democratic members of the Georgia House and Senate called the need for legislative action to expand Medicaid coverage âurgent.â
âThis governor has made it clear he wants to expand the scope of the session beyond redistricting,â said Rep. Matthew Wilson, D-Brookhaven, the chief signatory to the letter, referring to Kempâs announcement last week that he will add tackling the recent rise in violent crime to the special session agenda. âIf weâre going to include other items in the special session, Medicaid expansion must be a top priority.â

Lobbyist pressure against new $100 million annual revenue source
Georgia State House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) has proposed a bonus payment to local law enforcement in a $75 million funding package.
We don’t think that goes nearly far enough to help the brave men and women who risk – and lose – their lives fighting the growing crime in Georgia. But across the board raises are apparently out of the question because of the usual reason…funding.
We have a funding solution.
While it is largely ignored in political circles, there is an enormous amount of money leaving Georgia every year before it can circulate in the state economy.
Crime is spiking across the city of Atlanta, and perhaps most visibly in Buckhead. Some residents there are saying it s time to secede from Atlanta and that forming their own city is the best way to protect their citizens and keep a close eye on their tax dollars. Opponents of Buckhead cityhood believe that this could be a tremendous hit to the economy of the city of Atlanta. On the latest episode of
Georgia Today, we talk to J.D. Capelouto, news reporter from
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, about the push by some residents for Buckhead to secede from Atlanta.
