TU loses third straight home game this month
It was another disappointing night for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane as they played the Tulane Green Wave last Wednesday night at the Reynolds Center. For the third time in the month of February, Tulsa lost while playing at home. They had not lost three straight home games since the 2016-2017 season.
Tulane opened the scoring to begin the game, but Tulsa immediately responded by tying the game at two points each. Over the next few minutes, Tulsa and Tulane went back and forth as to who held the lead. Just past the halfway point of the first quarter, Tulsa had a four-point lead. However, this was as large a lead as they would get during the entire game as Tulane came roaring back with a 15-0 run, which they carried into a 38-25 halftime lead.
Two Tulsa Comebacks Fall Short
Last week, the Golden Hurricane played two games at the Reynolds Center. The first game was on Wednesday, Feb. 3 against the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Mustangs. The second game was on Saturday, Feb. 6 against the University of Central Florida (UCF) Bulls.
In the first game, SMU got ahead early, but twice in the first half TU tied the game only for the Mustangs to immediately regain the lead. In the second half, Tulsa had a strong comeback at the end of the game. With just under three and a half minutes remaining in the game, Tulsa trailed by twelve points. Rey Idowu made a jumper to bring the Golden Hurricane to within ten points with three minutes remaining. Following this Brandon Rachal made several shots and Tulsa came within six points. Darius Perry scored 18 points with five 3-pointers and Brandon Mahan posted 15 points, all from behind the arc, as Central Florida topped Tulsa 65-58 on Saturday.
Perry and Mahan made 10 of UCF’s (5-9, 3-8 American Athletic Conference) 13 3-pointers as the Knights did more than half their shooting from distance, 22 of 53 overall, 13 of 28 from deep.
Elijah Joiner had 14 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Golden Hurricane (9-8, 6-6). Darien Jackson added 12 points. Keyshawn Embery-Simpson had 10 points.
Tulsa trailed by double digits most of the second half, but came as close as 57-56 on a Jackson layup with 2:31 remaining. Perry made a free throw, Mahan buried a 3 and UCF won going away.
