U.S. senators backs HFX plan to honor Taiwan s president at forum

Taipei, April 30 (CNA) Two U.S. senators who are also co-chairs of the Senate Taiwan Caucus, sent joint letters to Canada s top leaders on Tuesday to express their support for awarding Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) at the Halifax International Security Forum (HFX). Since her election in 2016, President Tsai continues to promote democratic values in the face of Chinese aggression, said Senator Robert Menendez and James Inhofe in the letters addressed to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan.

April 30 (UPI) China said it is willing to put a stop to any movement toward Taiwanese independence, after the U.S. director of national intelligence said Thursday that Taiwan s views of independence are hardening amid tensions.
Beijing s foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters that Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen s Democratic Progressive Party is responsible for the root cause of tensions, during a regular press briefing Friday.

Taiwan has commissioned the first of a fleet of coastguard ships that can be converted into warships to bolster defence of Taipei-controlled islands in the South China Sea, amid growing threats from mainland China.
Delivery of the new 5,000-tonne patrol vessel Chiayi - Taiwan s largest - to the island s coastguard, along with the launch of another similar frigate on Thursday, came two weeks after the Taiwanese navy launched its first modern amphibious assault and transport vessel, Yushan, to meet its needs in the disputed waters.
