Truck fell onto track less than 2 minutes before fatal train crash

Taipei, April 6 (CNA) The Taiwan Transportation Safety Board (TTSB) has deduced that the fatal collision between a Taroko express train and a crane truck on April 2 occurred less than two minutes after the truck fell onto the track near the entrance to the Qingshui Tunnel in Hualien County, eastern Taiwan.
The organization, which is independent of the government, announced at a presentation in Taipei Tuesday the findings of its investigation into the accident that killed 50 people and injured over 200.
Its results were based on data and video chips retrieved from the train s drive recorder and its automatic protection and control and management systems.

Investigations are underway following the fatal derailment of a high speed train near Hualien in Taiwan on Friday after it hit a lorry linked to slope stabilisation work on Friday.
At least 50 people were killed and more than 200 injured in the crash, which occurred as the eight carriage Taroko Express train travelling from Taipei to Taitung entered the Qingshui Tunnel to the north of Hualien.
The Taiwan Transportation Safety Board has started to analyse CCTV of the incident and has already suggested that the train driver – who was killed in the crash – only had 10 seconds view of the obstruction that had slid down a 20m slope near the tunnel portal before the collision. The train was reported to be travelling at 100km/h at the time of the incident.

The crane truck that caused last week’s fatal train accident had slid onto the tracks about one-and-a-half minutes before it was struck, the Taiwan Transportation Safety Board said yesterday.
The board had launched an investigation into the derailment, which killed 50 people and injured 211 people, making it the nation’s most devastating railway accident in decades.
