BEIJING, March 17 (Xinhua) A Chinese mainland spokesperson Wednesday warned Taiwan s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) that any attempt to undermine prosperity and stability in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) is futile.
Anyone damaging China s sovereignty, security and development interests will swallow the bitter fruit of his acts, said Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, in a stern warning to the DPP.
The DPP has repeatedly leveled unwarranted criticism against a decision on improving the electoral system of the HKSAR by the country s top legislature, Zhu said, adding that the legislative move will put an end to collusion between separatist elements advocating Taiwan independence and those seeking Hong Kong independence. China defends ban on Taiwanese pineapple imports
China has defended its ban on imports of pineapples from Taiwan and accused its ruling party of politicizing the matter.
Chinese customs authorities imposed the ban on March 1, citing pests.
Taiwanese authorities say no pests have been detected since control measures were tightened last October. The ruling Democratic Progressive Party says the ban is politically motivated.
A spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of China s State Council spoke to reporters about the ban on Wednesday.
Zhu Fenglian said mainland authorities notified Taiwan of 28 cases last year in which its pineapples were disqualified, but that the problem has yet to be addressed.
