High school student impaled by javelin in Toms River TOMS RIVER A teenager was hospitalized after he was impaled by a javelin at a track-and-field event, police said Police were called to Donovan Catholic High School in Toms River late Tuesday afternoon where officers found the javelin impaled in the 16-year-old Pine Beach resident s right thigh. There was no sign of bleeding and the boy was able to talk with medical responders, police said. He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. The extent of his injuries was not known. It was not clear if the boy is a student at the school or if he was participating in the event.

Scott, 71, died more than three weeks after being injured while working as an official at a competition of Rowan University, a school spokesman said Thursday. The Oaklyn man, who was injured April 3, died April 26 in the intensive care unit at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, according to an obituary. Details of the accident were not immediately available. Scott was an official for track and field in South Jersey for over 30 years, according to Carl Rickershauser, who is the NJSIAA track and field rules interpreter.

The incident occurred about 5:40 p.m. in a field outside Donovan Catholic High School on Hooper Avenue in Toms River, police said. “Upon arrival, officers were directed to an open field near the track-and-field training area” where they found an injured 16-year-old boy, said Jillian Messina, spokeswoman for the Toms River Police Department. The teen, who is from Pine Beach, had suffered an injury from a “javelin impaled in his right thigh,” Messina said in an email.
