Washington in Final Convulsions of Trump Era

Washington in Final Convulsions of Trump Era Washington Memo Jan. 6, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail WASHINGTON After 1,448 days of trench warfare with friends and foes alike, 1,448 days of Twitter blasts and busted norms and shock-jock governing, 1,448 days of dominating the national conversation and rewriting reality to suit his needs, President Donald Trump arrived Wednesday at a moment of reckoning. All that was left was the shouting. Barring an unforeseen surprise, Congress was poised to ratify Trump’s election defeat with bipartisan majorities despite a furious effort to persuade Republicans to block the count. At the same time, Democrats appeared on the cusp of winning the second of two runoff elections in Georgia to seize control of the Senate and complete their takeover of the executive and legislative branches.

Georgia Runoffs Could Prove A Key Factor in Trump s Post-Presidential Sway Within GOP

 | Updated January 4, 2021 WASHINGTON – As Republicans assess the future of their party following their seventh popular vote loss in eight presidential elections, the biggest remaining unknown could become clear this week in a longtime GOP bastion that two months ago flipped to Democrat Joe Biden. Republican losses in the pair of Georgia runoff elections Tuesday would throw control of the Senate to Democrats, giving them control of the White House and both chambers of Congress for the first time in a decade and adding an exclamation point to President Donald Trump’s November loss. Trump became just the fourth president in a century to fail to win reelection, and his refusal to concede and continued lies that Democrats “stole” it from him have put off the sort of analysis that the party undertook after losing to incumbent Barack Obama in 2012. Suddenly losing the Senate as well could heighten the party’s sense of urgency.

2021 Political Predictions: 8 Burning Questions Answered

Photo: IStock A century ago, President Warren G. Harding was sworn in on the promise that he could bring unto the nation “a return to normalcy.” To Americans recovering from a devastating foreign war and a flu pandemic, that sounded awfully appealing. As we roll into our ’20s, we certainly can relate. And all signs do point to a somewhat kinder, gentler 2021. Our new president, love or hate him, is unlikely to generate daily drama and controversy. There aren’t a ton of important elections to divide and consume us. And, God and/or Big Pharma willing, a workable COVID-19 vaccine will allow us to un-pause our lives.

With Biden, Britain s Brexiteers lose cheerleader

Come January, Britain both definitively leaves the 27-nation bloc and will deal with a new US president, Joe Biden, who prioritises the EU and shares none of the Brexiteers romanticism about going it alone.
