European Shares Rise With Georgia Runoff In Focus
BRUSSELS/FRANKFURT/PARIS (dpa-AFX) - European stocks rose slightly on Wednesday after Democrats won one hotly contested U.S. Senate race in Georgia and pulled ahead in a second, raising hopes for larger stimulus in the world s largest economy.
Winning both seats would allow Democrats to avert gridlock in Congress and give Biden a chance to enact his legislative agenda.
The pan European Stoxx 600 edged up 0.2 percent to 401.89 after closing 0.2 percent lower on Tuesday. The German DAX rose 0.4 percent, France s CAC 40 index gained 0.3 percent and the U.K. s FTSE 100 was up nearly 1 percent.

Amid the slew of cancelled sports spectacles worldwide last year, the sputtering attempts to restart in empty arenas stalled events, and the success of an experimental bubble, the single biggest question for 2021 is “Will the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics, initially calendared in mid-2020 at the height of a deadly global pandemic, finally see the light of day this July?”
The high lords of the International Olympic Committee and their counterparts in the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games hope so, and both have expressed confidence that the lives and safety of 15,000 athletes from over 200 countries, not to mention hundreds of thousands of spectators, will not be placed at risk in what could potentially be a catastrophic super-spreader event.
Basic Agreement Reached with All 68 Tokyo 2020 Domestic Partners regarding Contract Extension 12/24/20
Tokyo, 24 December 2020 - The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) today announced that, with regard to the hosting of the Tokyo 2020 Games next year, it has reached basic agreement with all 68 Tokyo 2020 domestic partner companies on an extension of their sponsorship contracts. Based on this agreement, we are proceeding with the conclusion of contracts with all partners.
Tokyo 2020 President MORI Yoshiro commented as follows: We have recently confirmed that we have reached basic agreement with all domestic partners supporting the Tokyo 2020 Games regarding the extension of their contracts into 2021.
