New level of control over stem cells will help accelerate research, lead to therapeutic applications

New level of control over stem cells will help accelerate research, lead to therapeutic applications Researchers from Tokyo Metropolitan University have been quantifying how different batches of mesenchymal stem cells respond to the mechanical stiffness of their environments. They focused on how certain proteins were localized in cell nuclei and found key trends in how this changed with stiffness. Their findings explain inconsistencies between previous findings and may guide how scientists control the state of stem cells for research and medical treatments. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are important progenitor cells that can transform into muscle, cartilage, bone or fat cells. In 2006, pioneering work by Engler and coworkers showed that they could control what cell type mesenchymal stem cells transformed (or differentiated ) into by simply placing them on surfaces with a different mechanical stiffness, or

New Species of Horrific Amphibious Centipedes Named After Local Dragon God

(Photo : Photo by Karynne Grabovski from Pixabay) What started as a little pest investigation turned into a surprising (and somewhat scary) discovery of an entirely new species of amphibious centipede in Okinawa, Japan. This specie was aptly named after a local dragon god. Researchers at the Tokyo Metropolitan University received a little-known piece of news about strangely large, amphibious centipedes attacking freshwater prawns in local streams. Curious, they set out in the hopes of bringing back some form of samples to confirm its identity. When they finally encountered the insectoid predators, they measured roughly around eight inches in length and DNA analysis confirmed that it was a completely new species. This marks the first discovery of a new Japanese centipede in over 143 years. This is also the third species of a new type of large, amphibious centipedes recently confirmed to exist in the world, with the first being found in Southeast Asia.

Researchers discover monster centipede in Japan that feasts in rivers

Researchers discover monster centipede in Japan that feasts in rivers Researchers in Japan have discovered a new amphibious centipede species that live around streams and attack freshwater prawns for meals. The creature measures around 8-inches in length with a terrifying jade-colored appearance, and it holds the distinction of being the largest (known) centipede in Taiwan and Japan. The discovery was made by researchers with Hosei University and Tokyo Metropolitan University after reports of a centipede that was attacking freshwater prawns in rivers in the Ryukyu Archipelago. After collecting samples of this critter, the researchers used genetic testing to confirm it is a new amphibious centipede species.
