BOE hears cultural unity and diversity goals By Toni Milbourne - For the Chronicle | May 14, 2021 Dallas-Lewis CHARLES TOWN Tanya Dallas-Lewis, cultural diversity/staff development coordinator for Jefferson County Schools, appeared before the Jefferson County Board of Education Monday evening, to present a variety of cultural unity and equity goals and how they are being reached in the school system. Through a series of slide presentations, Dallas-Lewis shared goals specific to attracting, recruiting and retaining “outstanding educators that reflect the social and ethnic cultures of our student population.” To achieve those goals, Dallas-Lewis expressed the need and the efforts to partner with historically black colleges and universities. One of her goals, she said, was to increase educators of color by nine percent by 2030. As a Jefferson County School Board member, I have been hesitant to speak out, not wanting to represent the entire school board. However, this letter is personal. This letter is written as Donna Joy, a mother who is in a unique position to advocate for the health and well-being of children. I am just one of five school board members. Again, this letter is written by Donna, an individual community member concerned about our children. Yes, all children are “our” children. We are the adults and we must take a stand for them.

Last month, as the U.S. grieved over attacks against Asian Americans, NPR s Morning Edition collected poems on how people grapple with the increased violence and discrimination. Over 500 listeners shared powerful, poignant poems in the form of a list beginning with the word today. They showcased fear, anger, empathy and motivation to make the world a better place.
