One issue on top of Galesburg voters minds is a proposed $26 million Lake Storey expansion project. A Phase One feasibility study, released in December, outlined expanding the lake to four times its current size and building new homes.
The Lake Storey Project
The root of the proposed project is to offer the community more recreational opportunities, according to Galesburg Park and Recreation Director Tony Oligney-Estill.
He explained that developing housing along the lake is one way to pay for the expansion. The $26 million price tag includes $10 million for purchasing land, $6 million for building costs, and an estimated $10 million for park use.

GALESBURG A preliminary study on a project that would nearly quadruple the size of Lake Storey indicates the project is both physically and financially feasible.
The study by Edgewater Resources was completed this month after being approved by the city council in February.
The project would expand the lake by about 427 acres, from the current 144.65 acres to approximately 572. This would entail acquiring 925 acres of land that is currently a mix of agricultural and forest areas, as well as residential properties.
According to the study, the project would preserve all but eight existing homes within the project area and provide an opportunity for the creation of new residential and mixed-use neighborhoods that would attract new residents.
