Charles Grant, Director of the Centre for European Reform, fears the UK still has five key areas that will determine the future relationship between the country and the European Union. Mr Grant looked at European countries outside the EU, like Switzerland, who have been in a constant negotiation limbo with the bloc since the mid-seventies. The political expert forecast Brexit Britain may soon be entering a similar situation and face as much as 50 years of additional talks with Brussels.

David Lidington, Chair of the Conservative Group for Europe and Former Minister of State for Europe, admitted he sees no drive behind campaigns for the UK to rejoin the European Union. Mr Lidington added people did not want to go through the last five years “in reverse” but there was scope to review and improve the Brexit trade agreements. The former MP believes any further development depends on the political dynamics of the EU over the next 15 years.

Brigid Laffan, Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, warned Brexit may set a precedent for Irish nationalists to push for independence. The political scientist added a border poll may not be a topic that gains much traction within the next few years but forecast Ireland will want to hold a referendum roughly 15 years from now. She highlighted the impact of the poll would not affect the Irish economy but would severely harm the Good Friday agreement.

David Lidington, Chair of the Conservative Group for Europe and Former Minister of State for Europe, explained Boris Johnson has an opportunity to prove the UK can lead the Western world against global issues. The former MP said the UK’s successful vaccine programme would be a good example of showing Britain is strong post-Brexit. Mr Lidington added it was important to watch how Britain now interacts with the world’s main players to see if there will be any overlap in ideas and interests.
