100 Years of Presque Isle State Park Celebrating Erie s lakeside peninsula playground by Jonathan Burdick
Jessica Hunter
Whether you re standing in an unoccupied lifeguard s chair or sitting on the beach, Presque Isle State Park s sunsets are some of the world s most breathtaking.
On June 10, 1921, Otto G. Hitchcock, vice president of Hays Manufacturing Company, spoke at an event about the Pennsylvania state legislature s authorization to create a state park out of the Presque Isle peninsula on Lake Erie. He was thrilled, because the peninsula, Hitchcock declared, was a veritable playground of unsullied nature along the shore and the most important attraction in Erie.
The Perkins restaurant building is closed, as are the Arby s and Joe Roots restaurants.
Additionally, vacant undeveloped lots sit on both the north and south sides of the street. Turn north on Peninsula Drive and the diamond in the rough theory gets tested harshly. Indeed, the Sheetz on the northwest corner of West Sixth and Peninsula is now the one and only business in the entire stretch to the Tom Ridge Environmental Center and Waldameer Park & Water World. This all seems like a very unsubstantial gateway to a state park hosting some 4 million visitors annually.

The warm south wind on Tuesday brought in a wave of raptors with more than 3,900 birds counted flying past the Presque Isle Hawk Watch at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center. Most of those were turkey vultures all heading northeast along the Lake Erie shoreline. Other new bird arrivals reported this past week include great egret, yellow-bellied sapsucker, Eastern phoebe, tree swallow, hermit thrush, field sparrow and chipping sparrow. Wildflowers in bloom now are spring beauty, Persian speedwell, myrtle, dead nettle, common chickweed, Pennsylvania bittercress, hairy bittercress, golden saxifrage and forsythia. Mourning cloaks are on the wing now as well.
