Del Mar Union School District’s draft focused environmental impact report (EIR) for the Del Mar Heights School rebuild was released on April 28 and will be open for a 45-day public comment period through June 11.
The final environmental review document will be circulated from June 18-28 and is expected to be approved at the board’s June 30 meeting. At that point it would be filed back with the court and upon resolution of litigation with Save the Field, the district could resume the coastal development permit process with the city of San Diego.
“This is the next step in the process to get this important rebuild project completed,” said Holly McClurg, superintendent of the Del Mar Union School District in a release. “The students, their parents, and the vast majority of the community this school serves are eager to get this school back in service providing benefits to the children and taxpayers as it has for the last 60 years.”

Del Mar 14-year-old Lucas Pierce has turned a new hobby picked up during the pandemic into a passion for movie making. The fledgling filmmaker’s debut short film “Lost” was nominated for best film in the 12 to 14-year-old age group of the Kids Film It Festival, winning runner-up in a category that included four films from around the world.
Lucas wrote, directed, filmed and edited the movie, as well as taking on a supporting actor role alongside his little brother JJ who served as the film’s star. For the virtual award ceremony on March 5, Lucas and JJ walked a red carpet at home together before hearing the surprising results of Lucas’ first-ever film festival.

The Del Mar Heights School rebuild is on hold as the Del Mar Union School District completes additional environmental reviews, stemming from a court decision in the lawsuit against the district by Save the Field.
The district had planned to break ground on the project last summer and for students to be in their new school in August 2021, however, Heights students will continue to attend school off-site in the 2021-22 school year at Ocean Air School and Del Mar Hills Academy.
The project has been slowed by the requirement for a coastal development permit from the City of San Diego and the lawsuit, which alleges the district failed to comply with California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) with its “insufficient” Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) that concluded that the rebuild will result in no significant impacts on the environment. At the Feb. 24 meeting, the board vacated its approval of the MND to begin work on a “focused” environmental impact report.
