Gigi Gritt was ready for the big moment in a big game.
Coming up after an intentional walk to Allie Fryklund loaded the bases for San Marcos in the bottom of the seventh inning of a scoreless game, Gritt stepped up and ripped a walk-off single to right field for a 1-0 victory over Dos Pueblos, giving the Royals the outright Channel League championship on Thursday.
“To come through in that situation, there’s no one I’d rather have up there because of her maturity,” San Marcos coach Jeff Swann said of his sophomore catcher. “She’s calm and she has a great understanding of the game, and she knows the strike zone. That was the perfect player to have in there.”

Sherman praised his seniors, Ashley Gerken and Andrea Guevara, who finished their careers. Ashley has been a four year starter and has made all-league three years in a row, he said. She has been a great leader and player during this time. She does everything the right way. Andrea has been a committed team member in her two years here. She has gone out of her way to support teammates and has performed well as our starting center.

The same group of Charger swimmers took 16th in the 400 free relay in 3:21.47.
The DP girls 400 free relay squad of Brynn Graham, Caitlyn Robinson, Holly Maxwell and Andrea Bish placed 11th in 3:38.29.
In the 500 freestyle, freshman Natalie Murray came in 13th (5:14.10) and Bish placed 14th (5:14.15).
