Henderson County News: DuPont State Forest bridge named for Ag Department s WNC leader

Troxler and the Agriculture Department honored Yarborough for his 35 years of service to Western North Carolina by naming the Dupont State Recreational Forest Little River Access Bridge in his honor. “This bridge would not be here without Bill’s dedication, determination and strong desire to improve this forest for the citizens of Western North Carolina,” Troxler said of his top western aide, who recently retired. “Bill has always made it his top priority to make sure folks in Western North Carolina were heard. This part of the state has benefitted from his years of work and will continue to benefit from the legacy of service he has left. It is very fitting that we leave this legacy for him.”

DuPont State Recreational Forest to close parking areas for repairs after damage

The 20th anniversary “party” for DuPont State Recreational Forest in 2020, which lasted all year, brought 1.2 million visitors and an aftermath of vandalism, beer cans and a general trashing of parking lots and trails, was one for the record books. The sprawling state forest sprinkled with world-famous waterfalls, hiking and mountain biking trails in Henderson and Transylvania counties, saw a nearly 31% increase in visitation last year up from 918,000 visitors in 2019 – a number even more notable considering DuPont was closed for two months due to COVID-19 safety precautions. The increased traffic put excessive pressure on an already crowded outdoor destination, generating potholes in parking lots, creating the potential for sedimentation to reach the Little River and the need to temporarily close parking lots for repairs.
