GEORGE TOWN - The slow-moving muddy Sungai Muda that defines Penang s northern boundary with Kedah belie the growing spat between the two northern states in water-stressed Malaysia.
Kedah s rambunctious Chief Minister, Mr Muhammad Sanusi Mohd Nor, has promised to build enough blockades on the Kedah side of the river that will deprive Penang of its main source of raw water unless it pays annual compensation for drawing water from Sungei Muda. I can ask the villagers to put sandbags to dam the river at Pinang Tunggal… We will redirect Sungai Muda to somewhere else. Where will you (Penang) get your water from then? Mr Muhammad Sanusi warned recently in a worsening public spat between the two states, referring to a key intersection of the river between them.

Chong was responding to a news report that quoted Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin’s confirmation that plastic waste importers must pay RM20 for every tonne of scrap brought into the country for recycling beginning June.
Previously, plastic scrap importers do not need to pay any levy, and this latest move is a mechanism to regulate the plastic recycling industry.
In stating MCA’s objection towards Zuraida’s announcement carried in The Star on Apr 4, Chong said Malaysia isn’t at such a “desperate level” where the government had to resort to raising revenue from processing imported waste.

An update on Euro 5-standard diesel, which replaced Euro 2M diesel at all retail pumps across Malaysia as of April 1. The fuel is available in two grades, one with a B10/B20 biodiesel blend and the other, a B7 blend as it is currently. This was confirmed by a number of players in the fuel retail industry after we reached out to them over the matter.
Essentially, Euro 5 B10/B20 is a direct replacement for Euro 2M diesel and will follow the pricing parameters set for that, including the price ceiling of RM2.15 per litre, while Euro 5 B7 will continue to be sold as a separate product, priced at 10 sen more per litre than Euro 5 B10 as it is now (currently, RM2.25 a litre).
