San Diego community leaders reacted with a mix of horror and various degrees of outrage following a violent takeover of the U.S. Capitol by a mob bent on thwarting the peaceful transfer of power Wednesday.
Many local Democrats and Republicans alike condemned the violence. However, partisanship tended to show when it came to where to place the blame. And while the scenes that unfolded on televisions and social media feeds were shocking, some said this was a moment they had long anticipated.

“What we saw today in Washington was an assault on our democracy emboldened by the President of the United States. The violent actions of these extremists were infuriating and must be condemned by every American who believes in our Constitution and the rule of law.”

With a pandemic raging and Americans losing their jobs and healthcare, it seemed like the perfect way to hold Democrats’ feet to the fire.
But Dore’s push apparently threatened the most prominent progressive in Congress, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
