Using the approaches developed by Weissman and Karikó enabled the development and authorization of the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines within nine months; and both vaccines have shown efficacy rates around 95%. Thus far, over 250 million doses of one of these mRNA- based COVID vaccines have been administered in the United States.
