The Twin Cedars Basketball Squads are off to a slow start in Bluegrass Conference play this season. The Saber girls are 2-2 in conference play and 4-6 overall. Coach Trent Verwers tells KRLS Sports the conference record should be a little better, but he says that is a good start. Murray has already jumped out to a 5-0 conference start and led the girls race at the break. The boys are 1-3 to start BGC play, good enough for 8th place currently. Mormon Trail and Ankeny Christian lead the boys conference with respective 4-0 records.
The Twin Cedars Girls Basketball Squad finished the 1st part of the season with a 4-6 record. The Sabers have seen improvement from all of the girls, especially Rylee Dunkin and Cheyenne Bruns. Both have raised their scoring average by five points from last season. Coach Trent Verwers tells KRLS Sports the girls are getting the fact that they can no longer be the Brooke Roby show and everyone needs to contribute to have a chance to win.
Verwers:
“Rylee Dunkin and Cheyenne have picked up the scoring when Brooke has an off night. We just knew that was going to happen if we were going to win, and five points here and four points there is going to go a long way to giving us a chance in every game.”
The Twin Cedars Girls Basketball Squad finished the first part of the 2020/2021 schedule with a 4-6 record. Coach Trent Verwers tells KRLS Sports, he sees improvement from one season to the next, now the next step is to finish games that they know they can win and win the close games.
Verwers:
“I think this is the most wins we’ve had going into break than we’ve had in recent seasons, we could have had a few more, but our girls just need to start playing a little more to their potential.”
It was a rough night for the Twin Cedars Basketball Squads in Moravia on Tuesday. The Saber girls fell 30-28 after trailing at the half 20-9. Coach Trent Verwers told KRLS Sports his team took the lead with two minutes remaining but could not sustain it. The boys fell 61-31 with Kade Dunkin scoring 12 points to lead the Sabers. Twin Cedars will try to pull off a week of sweeps in the Bluegrass Conference as the boys and girls Sabers host Mormon Trail tonight. The girls have already seen progress from one season to the next. While Brooke Roby has been steady and the leading scorer, Rylee Dunkin and Cheyenne Bruns have stepped up and raised nearly every part of their respective games. Coach Trent Verwers (VAR-viss) tells KRLS Sports those two, plus a few other girls will have to continue that kind of progress if they are to have any chance to be competitive in the Bluegrass Conference.
