The City of New Bern Fire Department were already on the scene around 8 a.m. at United Storage - Trent Center cleaning up a portion of the debris when crews noticed smoke beginning to rise inside one of the units.
Fire Chief Robert Boyd said the crew called for back-up firefighters to assist in putting out the smoke. The incident did not turn into a full-on fire, but Boyd explained the unit began flaring up a bit .
What caused the flare-up was oxygen that seeped back into the debris and ash when items began to be moved around. We can cut off the oxygen to the room but when someone starts stirring things up again, it puts oxygen back into it, Boyd said.
