MUMBAI: After deputy CM Ajit Pawar scrapped a controversial decision to pay a private agency Rs 6 crore to handle his social media accounts over high costs, netas are urging the BMC to review its spending of close to Rs 2 crore a year for handling its social accounts, especially its 34 Twitter accounts.
MLAs and corporators from across parties alleged that there was no technical analysis to gauge the reach and impact of @mybmc and the 33 other Twitter handles, many of which are not verified (see graphic). They want the new tender process to be fast-tracked and a new agency to be appointed.

They spread “fake” stories on alleged poisoning of three girls, they say. Ready to fight it and face it in court, says Barkha Dutt The Unnao police on Sunday lodged an FIR under the charges of provoking rioting against eight Twitter users for spreading “fake” stories about the alleged poisoning of three Dalit girls in Asoha on February 17, which left two dead and one in hospital in critical condition.
LUCKNOW: The Unnao police on Sunday lodged an FIR against eight twitter handles and its users, including @themojostory run by senior journalist Barkha Dutt, on charges of spreading “misleading information” in connection with the recovery of the bodies of two minor girls in Baburha village of the district.
The other handles against whom the FIR has been lodged include @BhimSenaChief (run by Nawab Satpal Tanwar), @NilimDutta, @janjagranlive, @SurajKrBaudh (spokesperson, Azad Samaj Party), @vijayambedkarUP, @Abhaykumarazad97, and @Rahuldiwkr.
On Saturday, Congress MP Udit Raj had been booked by Unnao police for allegedly spreading misinformation through his tweet.
Unnao police claimed that the users of these eight twitter handles had tweeted that the two minor girls, who were found murdered in the fields, were sexually assaulted and that their last rites were performed against the wish of their families.

Indian Government has been on a spree for sending requests to Twitter regarding removal of accounts from its service. Twitter had received requests from the government to remove thousands of accounts from the social media app in the past few weeks as they were potentially spreading misinformation around farmers protests and were accused of making inflammatory remarks about Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India.

NEW DELHI: Microblogging site- Twitter aid in a blog post that it won t block the accounts of politicians, journalists and activists in India.
It is to be mentioned that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had requested to block certain profiles on national interests.
