Koala champion Jenny Hayes has been named the Tweed Shire Citizen of the Year. Tweed Shire Council held its awards and citizenship ceremony at Twin Towns Services Club in Tweed Heads this morning. Ms Hayes received the award for her ongoing work for the region s koala population, including in the founding of Team Koala in 2009. What I am really touched and appreciative about is how much the community has come together to protect our Tweed koalas. Just arrived, or been here for many generations, young and old, everyone joined together and that is so special, Ms Hayes said. Team Koala is a very diverse group and lots of different people contribute lots of different things - together I think we make a really great team to try to give our koalas a voice in our shire.

Items of concern include sanitary products, nappies, cloths and rags, syringes, needles, cotton buds, condoms, fats and oils. A blockage cleared by Gold Coast City Council. The Gold Coast recorded 764 blockages in 2020 and 525 in 2019 - a 45.5 per cent increase. Tweed recorded 544 blockages last year and 741 the year prior - a 26.5 per cent decrease.

A proposal for a $3 million townhouse development is on public exhibition with Tweed Shire Council.
Lodged on December 4 last year by Zone Planning Group, the development application seeks approval for a staged development comprising 13 townhouses over four construction stages at 201 Kennedy Drive in Tweed Heads West. 201 Kennedy Drive, Tweed Heads West is neighboured by a motel on one side and dwellings on the other.
According to documents lodged with the DA, the proposed density of dwellings exceeds that which is allowed for the site under the council’s planning rules.
Under current zoning, there should be just one dwelling per 250 sqm, but the proposal seeks to have one dwelling per 231.5 sqm.

The debate over our disused rail corridor has long gone stale. It is acrimonious, ideological, and exhibits a strong tendency to avoid key points. Everyone loves trains, but regrettably, train love will not return trains to our tracks.
The development of railroads was a signal feature of the industrial revolution. A century and a half later, deep in the digital age, we still cling desperately to the idea of trains – the embodiment of nineteenth century progress. The Murwillumbah branch line was built in 1894; its closure 110 years later was viewed as theft, regional neglect perpetuated by corrupt, self-interested, city politicians.
