Ballina Council displays climate change policy – The Echo

As students on the Northern Rivers were getting ready to strike for climate action again last Friday, the Ballina Shire Council quietly released a draft climate change policy. All four local government councils on far north coast have declared climate change emergencies in recent years, with the Tweed Shire Council so far appearing to be the one most actively pursuing its goal of net zero emissions by 2030. In July last year, Tweed Shire Councillors called for further action to meet 2022 and 2025 carbon emission reduction targets after a review of its Renewable Energy Action Plan showed savings had substantially increased but weren’t as high as projected.

Non-residential electoral roll open for registrations

Tweed Shire Council Owners of rateable property who live outside the Tweed Shire are invited to register to vote in the upcoming NSW Local Government election on Saturday 4 September 2021. Under NSW Government legislation, anyone who owns rateable property in a local government area is entitled to vote in that area – even if they do not live there. However, it is not compulsory to do so. Similarly, eligible occupiers and rate-paying lessees are also entitled to vote in council elections, with one vote per property allowed through a nominated representative. Unlike the normal electoral roll, the non-residential roll is not maintained by the NSW Electoral Commission, but by individual councils.
