Woodlands and Forestry haves many benefits for society including economic, social and environmental ones. They are a source of timber products, recreational spaces and habitat for biodiversity while also providing an important source of income for rural communities.
The Forestry Programme 2014 – 2020 (extended to end 2022) provides funding to the forestry sector in Ireland and consists of a number of measures aimed at the following:
increasing the level of forest cover,
increasing the supply of forest-based biomass,
supporting private forest holders in actively managing their forests, and

Two recent reports published by the Department of Health leave a lot of questions unanswered
In recent days, the Department of Health has published two reports it commissioned to examine allegations made in protected disclosures by Shane Corr, one of its senior civil servants.
In March, RTÉ Investigates revealed that Mr Corr had raised concerns that the Department was secretly using private clinical and education information to build and maintain dossiers on children with autism who were involved in legal actions against the State.
This was done without the knowledge or consent of parents.
Each of the recently published reports appear to indicate that there are no significant causes for concern. But, together, the external report, produced by a senior counsel, and an internal review that was ordered following the RTÉ Investigates report leave a lot of questions unanswered.

GARDAÍ WERE CALLED to an ambulance station in the south of the country after one paramedic allegedly threatened his colleague during a ‘verbal altercation’ as they responded to a call to tend to a sick child.
The incident, which happened in March, involved two National Ambulance Service (NAS) paramedics who were responding to a call.
An argument broke out between them as they drove to the incident leading to one man allegedly threatening his colleague.

A 96-year-old man is still waiting for his Covid-19 vaccine - possibly one of the oldest in the country not to have received the life-saving jab.
Retired farmer Paddy McNamara, who is cared for in his own home in Castledermot, Co Kildare should have been among the first cohort to receive their vaccinations in February.
However, his family said he is still waiting for a vaccine date so that he can have some peace of mind. Paddy is 96 years of age and although he is housebound and a little deaf, his mental faculties are excellent, Paddy’s daughter-in-law Mags McNamara said.

It has powers to inspect and seize documents and to examine back-end computer systems.
A key issue raised by the whistleblower, civil servant Shane Corr, was that dossiers containing sensitive information on the children and their families was easily accessible and searchable by anyone working in the department’s division dealing with older people, social care and disability policies.
It is likely this was one of the issues explored during the inspections.
