Children who spend a lot of time on digital devices, especially mobile phones, face higher risks of developing cognitive disorders later in life. This warning from medical experts might exert more pressure on the often shaky relationship between parenting and technology. Even more worrying is that coronavirus pandemic has provided children with spates of involuntary holidays in which most spent consuming hundreds of combined hours on mobile phones, tablets, television and laptops. This is even trickier considering most parents, teachers and children now increasingly have to rely on mediated learning through digital classrooms increasing prolonged exposure to screen time. Dr Michael Mbiriri, a child psychotherapist, now warn that the end result might be   “premature thinning of the cortex, the outer layer of the brain, leading to low IQ scores.”

Survey: Kenyans send 14 2bn short messages in second quarter of 2020/21 year

THE STANDARD SCI & TECH NAIROBI, KENYA: The number of Kenyans sending short messages through their mobile phones is on the decline, a new survey by the Communications Authority of Kenya shows. The second-quarter survey shows a decline of 16.5 per cent in the total local SMS sent from mobile networks to 14.2 billion messages from 17.0 billion recorded in the preceding quarter. CA links the drop to a reduction in SMS bundle usage with many customers preferring to take advantage of the available voice and data offers instead. During the second quarter of the Financial Year 2020/21, the number of short messages sent per subscription per month dropped to 77.0 from 94.6 posted in the first quarter.
