Winona High to Shift to Distance Learning After Spring Break

By TJ Facebook/WAPS (KWNO)- The Winona Senior High School will voluntarily switch to distance learning following their spring break in early March.   “This a proactive measure. We realize it’s a little bit disruptive but that is why we wanted to announce it now, more than a month before spring break starts to give our staff and our families time to prepare,” said Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) Communications Coordinator John Casper.   Casper says the goal of the switch is to preserve in-person learning days and to prevent students from bringing the virus back to school with them from their spring break destinations. Casper said local health officials are particularly concerned about the virus spreading among high-school-aged students.

Schools gear up for learning-model changes

Gov. Tim Walz announced that schools could return elementary students to school starting Jan. 18. 10:00 am, Jan. 16, 2021 × Many students in southeast Minnesota are inching their way back into the classroom, with an eye toward eventually returning to normal. The majority of the students doing so are in elementary school. Gov. Tim Walz announced last month that school districts could return elementary students to their classrooms starting Jan. 18, regardless of the spread of the coronavirus in their communities. But many schools were able to allow students back in earlier because the presence of the coronavirus was low in their districts. All students in the Hayfield district returned to in-person learning on Jan. 11.
