HPE targets slice of 5G open RAN - Mobile World Live 25 FEB 2021
HPE expanded efforts to cash in on operator interest in open RAN, launching a hardware and software stack for 5G.
The Open RAN Solution Stack comprises a new ProLiant DL110 Gen10 Plus server, blueprints for RAN infrastructure, and orchestration and automation software.
It is the first product from the Communications Technology Group (CTG), a new unit also unveiled by the company yesterday (24 February) which combines HPE’s telecom infrastructure and communications software teams.
In a media briefing, CTG VP of communications infrastructure solutions Claus Pedersen said HPE aimed to add value “from a technology and delivery perspective” rather than compete with traditional equipment vendors.

Stack is first solution launch from vendor’s new Communications Technology Group
HPE has signalled its intent to play a pivotal role in the development of open, disaggregated radio access networks with the launch of its Open RAN Solution Stack, which includes orchestration and automation software, deployment blueprints and a new server product that is optimized for Open RAN workloads.
The new product set, which will become commercially available in the second quarter of this year, is the first solution set to come from the vendor’s newly-created Communications Technology Group, which is headed up by Phil Mottram.
Social distancing just became even harder in the bustling market for open RAN technology after HPE today set up its own server stall replete with orchestration bells and whistles. The US IT giant has been desperate to uncover a new growth opportunity. Sales fell 3.6% last year, to $56.6 billion, and earnings slumped 10%, to about $2.8 billion. It evidently believes the communications sector is a good bet.
Hence the unveiling of HPE Communications Technology Group (CTG), which lumps together various telco activities and gives them a shiny new outfit and some eye-catching new products. Today s push is mainly about the open RAN side of things, where HPE executives have spotted an opportunity to disrupt the status quo. It s a matter of how much vested interest there is in the old model, said Claus Pedersen, HPE s vice president of telecom infrastructure solutions, on a call with reporters. We have no vested interest in the old model.
Should be with carriers in the second quarter

HPE is getting into the OpenRAN game, with the newly minted Communications Technology Group today launching the OpenRAN Solution Stack, which combines network functionality with a suite of management tools.
The tech, which has support for both 5G and LTE standards, is connected to an orchestration platform, which HPE said allows carriers to manage their estate of towers (as well as the associated network functions and virtual machines running on them) from a single point of contact.
The company has also rolled out a new server to go with it. For the snappily named ProLiant DL110 Gen10 Plus Server, HPE picked Intel s third-gen Xeon Scalable silicon. Unlike a normal rack-mounted server, this has been designed for the relatively shallow boxes affixed to the side of mobile antennas.
