North Cheyenne Canyon Road closes for most of May

The Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department is closing North Cheyenne Canyon Road during weekdays in May while construction crews work on a parking lot improvement project, a city news release said. The closure began Monday and lasts until May 28, and runs between the northern boundary of North Cheyenne Cañon Park to Helen Hunt Falls, the release said. The project aims to expand a gravel lot from 75 non-designated spots to 92 designated spaces at the intersection of North Cheyenne Canyon Road, High Drive and Gold Camp Road, the release said. Concrete curbs and gutters will also be added along with paved surfaces and accessible parking spaces.

Petition drive seeks to replace traffic on part of Lower Gold Camp Road with shuttle service COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) A petition to ban traffic on Lower Gold Camp Road through North Cheyenne Cañon Park has gathered nearly 200 signatures in less than a week. The petition, posted on the website change.org, is titled Keep Gold Camp Road Closed and seeks to permanently keep traffic off a stretch between the paved road on the north side of the park to its connection with North Cheyenne Cañon Road on the park s upper south side. The post s creator, listed on the site as Charles Gage, wrote that Lower Gold Camp Road, and the park itself, are overwhelmed with traffic and trash, and expressed concern about wildfire danger in the area.

(KRDO) This week starts the second of three planned road closures in North Cheyenne Cañon Park, in the southwestern corner of Colorado Springs. The city is closing the main road through the popular park, North Cheyenne Cañon Road, for most of May in order to expand and pave a parking lot at the top of the park above Helen Hunt Falls. The parking lot is a popular place for people to access a variety of trails in the area; also closed for the project is the stretch of Lower Gold Camp Road within the park often considered the back way in which has been blocked by a large boulder for a week while authorities determine how to remove it.

Originally, Gold Camp Road was to be closed to all but construction vehicles, leaving North Cheyenne Road open to visitor traffic. However, a large boulder rolled down onto Gold Camp Road last week, closing it to all traffic and complicating plans for the project. Gold Camp Road belongs to the U.S. Forest Service and it is responsible for clearing the boulder, which could take several weeks, according to Colorado Springs Parks Senior Planner David Deitemeyer. Construction traffic for project will have to use North Cheyenne Road and the parks department closed all of North CheyenneÂ CaÃ±on Park to vehicles, Monday through Friday, until Memorial Day weekend.
