Teen charged as adult in fatal Easter shooting in Starkville

STARKVILLE - A 15-year-old male was arrested Tuesday and charged with the Sunday evening shooting of a 17-year-old in central Starkville. The Starkville Police Department arrested Tyrese Macon, 15, of Starkville, and charged him as an adult with murder. He was transported to the Oktibbeha County Jail where his is being held on a $750,000 bond. “This violent act has impacted a number of lives and is not a reflection of Starkville’s core values,” said Starkville Police Chief Mark Ballard. “Senseless violence has left one teenager dead and another teenager has forever changed the course of his life.” Police responded to the intersection of Hilliard Street and Sherman Street around 5:15 p.m. April 4 to the report of a shooting with a possible victim. The responding officers found a deceased white male, later identified as Clifton Hester Files, 17, of Starkville.

Police are seeking suspects in a fatal shooting at the intersection of Hilliard and Sherman streets that claimed the life of James Clifton Hester Files, 17. Officers responded to the scene at about 5:17 p.m., SPD spokesperson Brandon Lovelady said. Files was pronounced dead at the scene. Lovelady said investigators do not have suspects in custody but believe the suspects fled on foot to a wooded area after firing the shots. He said detectives think the victim and suspects knew each other . SPD is investigating the motive of the shooting.

STARKVILLE • Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a young man in central Starkville Sunday evening. At approximately 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, the Starkville Police Department responded to a report of a shooting with a possible victim at the intersection of Hilliard Street and Sherman Street. Responding officers found a deceased white male, later identified as Clifton Hester Files, 17, of Starkville. According to Starkville police spokesman Sgt. Brandon Lovelady, the shooting occurred near the end of Sherman Street. The suspects are believed to have fled on foot into a wooded area after firing the shots. Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe the suspects and victim knew each other and their motive is under investigation.
