Rose Brown and The Echo Hose and Ladder Auxiliary are collecting donations for the family, displaced after fire destroyed their Long Hill Avenue home April 26. The family an adult and two children, ages 13 and 4 were not home at the time of the fire, which was reported just before 4 p.m. Deputy Fire Chief Paul Wilson said the first firefighters on the scene found the first two levels of the two-and-a-half story structure completely ablaze.

Make sure you have a “green” area between your home and the woods. Avoid having dry grass against your house. Keep the grass hydrated. Inspect the electrical cords in your home and replace worn or tattered ones. Avoid running cords under carpets, across doorways or under lawn furniture to prevent them from being damaged. When using extension cords outdoors, make sure they are rated for outdoor use and always unplug them immediately after use.

Deputy Fire Chief Paul Wilson, who commanded 16 volunteers on scene, said firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from Charter Arms, 18 Brewster Lane, about 8:30 a.m. In all, 17 department volunteers were on scene. Wilson said crews observed a small fire in the facility’s shooting range. Firefighters used a 2 ½-gallon water fire extinguisher to suppress the small fire, Wilson said.
