Remembering Bev, Jack and the Harbor Inn - Shelter Island Reporter

Remembering Bev, Jack and the Harbor Inn A warm and welcoming harbor, no matter the weather. (Credit: Courtesy photo) With the news of Beverly Cahill passing away recently, many Islanders thought of the good times at the Harbor Inn, a tavern run by Bev and her husband Jack for 20 years, between 1965 and 1985. Many have said that the Harbor Inn was the best tavern in the history of the Island, and that the Cahills made it special. In 2015 we published this remembrance of the Harbor Inn in the words of the people who went there, a history of the camaraderie, the laughs and the connection to community it created.  This is a time when we could all use a little Harbor Inn in our lives.

Their conversation considered what inspired the historic address, and how it can be applied to individuals and communities in light of a time of mass protests for racial equality.

EMS workers get initial COVID vaccine: Cases continue to spike on Island

(Credit: Steve Wick) Shelter Island’s Emergency Medical Services personnel began receiving COVID-19 vaccinations Wednesday at Northwell Health in Riverhead, Police Chief Jim Read announced at Wednesday afternoon’s final Town Board meeting of the year. It’s not yet clear whether the vaccine will  be administered on the Island. All health care workers are in the first tier of those eligible for the vaccines in line with protocols set by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are communities around the country breaking the CDC regulations in order to provide first doses to elderly patients with compromised immunity because of other health conditions, according to a report carried by at least two news networks. But Shelter Islanders, following Stony Brook Southampton Hospital regulations, are sticking to the CDC protocols.

Shelter Island Reporter Letters to the Editor - Shelter Island Reporter

Shelter Island Reporter Letters to the Editor To the Editor: The Recycling Center is a public space, and as such should not be dominated by any partisan message. To have a truck centrally parked all day long flying a large partisan flag violates this principle. The same principle applies to Town Hall, Justice Court, the Post Offices and the Police Department. The neutrality of public spaces is extremely important in a democracy. This issue needs to be addressed by the community. MARTIN I. AINBINDER, Shelter Island Failure to contact To the Editor: An article in the Reporter (“Siller: Yard sales on ‘back burner,’” Dec. 3), refers to my wife, Kathleen Minder and me, Stephen Gessner.
