St. Vincent de Paul Places First Tiny House in Third Street Courtyard, Providing Shelter for Volunteer

Thanks to the recent donation of a brand new tiny home to St. Vincent de Paul in Eureka, one less person is sleeping outside. Last week, the first of at least two planned tiny shelters was installed in the courtyard of SVDP’s Third Street dining facility home of the nonprofit’s daily free meal providing housing for a longtime free meal volunteer, Christy, and her dog.
Chico City Councilmembers Alex Brown and Scott Huber held a press conference Tuesday in response to what Brown called a lack of evidence-based solutions to the city’s unhoused population.
Multiple disruptions occurred. Some female attendees and journalists felt provoked by male protestors. Car alarms drowned out the speakers, hecklers interrupted the councilmembers’ messages and some protestors tried to block those recording the event.
After the press conference, Brown responded to the disruptions.
“Councilmember Huber and myself did not foresee a need for security at this peaceful protest and rally, although anyone was invited to attend and hear what we had to say,” Brown said. “In hindsight, I wish we had.”
