Cyril Ramaphosa condemns wealthy vaccine hoarding nations
South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa gave a short address at the virtual World Economic Forum which opened on the 25th and will end on the 29th of January. The theme for this year’s forum is ‘The Great Reset‘. Leaders will spend the week affirming their commitment to rebuilding the world’s economic and social systems to ensure a more fair, sustainable and resilient future. When Ramaphosa spoke about Africa’s urgent task in vaccinating the continent’s people, he condemned wealthy countries for hoarding vaccines. He said that wealthy countries who had purchased three or four times the vaccine doses they needed in acts of ‘vaccine nationalism’ should urgently free up supply for poorer nations. The president, who is also chairman of the African Union, emphasised that poorer countries should not be given the vaccines free of charge. South Africa’s president Monday confirmed his country will soon receive its first consignment of COVID-19 vaccines from the Serum Institute in India, the world’s largest vaccine producer.
Cyril Ramaphosa said with the arrival of the consignment, which is expected soon, the country will launch a mass vaccination campaign.
“It will reach all parts of the country and will be phased to ensure that those most in need are prioritized,” the president wrote in his weekly column to the nation on Monday.

JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered a virtual State of the World Address to the World Economic Forum Davos Dialogues on Tuesday.
Ramaphosa shared the outlook for South Africa s economic recovery amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and discussed the African Union’s achievements as its outgoing Chairperson, particularly its regional management of the pandemic.
Ramaphosa said the virus has deepened inequality. We must forge a new path and a new design to a world that is just, peaceful, cohesive, resilient and sustainable.
In coming weeks, the country will receive a batch of 1.5 million Astrazeneca vaccine doses from the Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine producer.
With South Africa gearing to receive its first consignment of COVID-19 vaccines, President Cyril Ramaphosa has reiterated that government’s mass vaccination campaign strategy would reach all corners of the country, prioritising those most in need.
The President emphasised the commitment in the latest edition of his weekly newsletter on Monday.
The President said that in coming weeks, the country will receive a
batch of 1.5 million Astrazeneca vaccine doses from the Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine producer. (Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, said earlier this month that South Africa would receive one million doses of the vaccine in January, with the rest in February.)
President Cyril Ramaphosa said that all South Africans need to work together to build confidence in the COVID-19 vaccine, to demonstrate its effectiveness and its safety – and to emphasise its vital importance in overcoming the disease.
