Background Information The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to about 220 countries and territories with more than 71.5million cases; and claimed over 1.6million lives globally. In Africa, over 2.4million cases have been reported in all countries, with nearly 57,000 deaths. Africa CDC continue to work with Member States to ensure an effective response to the outbreak by Member States, including maintaining key public health measures which have helped to slow down the pandemic on the continent and to be prepared as some countries are already experiencing a second wave of infections. Dr Nkengasong will be joined by Professor Heidi Larson, Director of the Vaccine Confidence Project at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine at this week’s briefing which will cover regular updates on the COVID-19 situation and Africa CDC response activities across the continent.

The survey was conducted by Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), in partnership with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Conducted between August and December 2020, the survey interviewed more than 15,000 adults, aged 18 years and above, across 15 African countries: Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia, and Uganda. Data from the survey shows significant variations in willingness across countries and across the five regions in the continent, from 94% and 93%, respectively, in Ethiopia and Niger to 65% and 59%, respectively, in Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
