Eduardo vigorously scrubs his hands and face with disinfectant. Jose does the same, puts on a mask, and then pulls it down to light a cigarette.
“This is essential to cope with all this,” Jose, 62, told Al Jazeera, surrounded by empty coffins at Funeraria Velhinho, a funeral home in Lisbon.
He has been working as an undertaker for 40 years, but Eduardo, who works with him most days, joined the profession just five months ago, in the middle of the pandemic.
He needed the work to support his family, including his 10-year-old daughter who is recovering from a stroke.

The Black Jaguar Foundation plans to reforest 1 million hectares (2.4 million acres) along Brazil’s Araguaia and Tocantins rivers in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes. The 2,600 kilometer (1,615 mile) long natural corridor will require the planting of around 1.7 billion trees. Tens-of-thousands have already been planted.
This natural corridor will be established on private lands, and it will have dual ecological and economic goals, resulting in both land conservation and sustainable agroforestry production. It would cross six Brazilian states (Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Tocantins, Pará and Maranhão).
Corn harvest in the Midwest faced many challenges last year, and it all started with yet another challenging spring with more challenges during the growing season too. Phil Krieg, agronomy service representative with Syngenta says there is a number one item growers are talking about as we get closer to another planting season.
“The number one thing that growers have on their mind is weed control, making sure that they start clean and stay clean so that they can finish strong. My recommendation to growers is they should definitely sit back and know your weeds, know the biology of those weeds,” he explained.

India’s COVID-19 vaccination program is off to a record breaking start. Till early morning on Tuesday, over 4.54 lakh people have received first dose of either of the two vaccines – Covishield or Covaxin. The updated statistics at the end of Day 4 of Vaccination is likely to show total number of vaccinations in excess of 5 lakhs.
The start of India’s vaccination exercise comes amidst a steady decline in active cases. India’s total active cases have fallen below 2 Lakh for the first time in 7 months. Daily number of deaths due to COVID-19 is less than 140, lowest in 8 months. Health Ministry has stated that only two states, Maharashtra and Kerala have an active case count above 50,000. Amidst the successful start, the concerns of vaccine hesitancy have come to the fore.
