YouTube to launch parental control features for families with tweens and teens
YouTube announced this morning it will soon introduce a new experience designed for teens and tweens who are now too old for the schoolager-focused YouTube Kids app, but who may not be ready to explore all of YouTube. The company says it’s preparing to launch a beta test of new features that will give parents the ability to grant kids more limited access to YouTube through a “supervised” Google Account. This setup will restrict what tweens and teens can watch on the platform, as well as what they can do like create videos or leave comments, for example.

After being ranked as one of the worst corporate entities complicit in “perpetuating” sexual exploitation, the social media giant TikTok is giving parents more control over their children’s use of the app through new family safety control features.
Weeks after being named on the National Center for Sexual Exploitation’s annual Dirty Dozen List, the social media video platform with over 500 million users announced new modes available to parents in the U.S. and U.K. to “keep their teens safe on TikTok.”

Plastic surgeons are using TikTok to promote their procedures to young teenagers, despite the app banning cosmetic surgery adverts.
Videos showing plastic surgery are appearing on the For You page of children as young as 14, which mental health experts say is deeply problematic .
Videos of cosmetic surgery transformations have become a viral trend on the app.
The hashtag #nosejob has over 1.9 billion views, and #plasticsurgery has accumulated more than 4.5 billion views.

LEWISTON Administrators are looking into a way to offer filtered YouTube access to students on school devices.
Superintendent Jake Langlais introduced the idea at a School Committee meeting Monday night.
“I believe the benefits outweigh the risks,” he said. “I think there is massive benefit to YouTube’s educational platform.”
The online video platform offers educational material that would greatly enrich remote instruction, he said. Teachers have full access, and students had it until a few years ago.
“The media that is added to YouTube on a daily basis is incredible,” Langlais wrote in a memo to the committee. “Much of the content is educationally purposeful.”
