Photo by John Anderson With hundreds, possibly thousands of Austin residents still without water, and others struggling to repair damage from last week’s historic winter storms, City Council emphasized at its special-called meeting Friday, Feb. 26 that the crisis is not yet behind us. “We’re not even at the recovery stage yet, Mayor Pro Tem Natasha Harper-Madison said at the meeting. We’re still trying to stabilize. Austin Water Director Greg Meszaros estimated that the residents of between 200 and 400 apartment complexes throughout the city do not have water service, due to plumbing damage on the private property beyond the water meter.

Austin Council members demand answers on looming food shortage

As most Austin homes had regained access to water and electrical power by Monday, the focus in responding to last week s winter storm crisis shifted to restocking refrigerators and pantries. Four City Council members sent a letter to City Manager Spencer Cronk over the weekend asking what his plan is to help feed lower-income residents who lost perishable items in the power outage and now can t pay for groceries because they missed work and haven t been paid. The four  Natasha Harper-Madison, Vanessa Fuentes, Sabino Pio Renteria and Greg Casar said in the letter that they did not get a response to phone calls and emails to Cronk on Friday and Saturday.
