Brighton and Hove Police said it carries out extensive work to disrupt and prevent crime such as burglary as well as respond to concerns of the local community. It asks communities to continue working with police to limit the opportunities for break-ins to commercial and residential premises. As part of local initiatives and Operation Magpie, it is carrying out proactive work to target burglars and reduce instances of burglary by keeping people informed on how to protect their properties. From April 2020 to March 2021, Brighton and Hove saw a reduction of over 35 per cent in residential burglaries and over 60 per cent in business burglaries from the previous year.

This is due, in part, to its proximity to London and appetite for powerful and profitable drugs such as cocaine. To help supply this demand, it is reported that children as young at ten are being recruited through social media by exploitative gangs to hold drugs and weapons. Some will be kept in a “trap house” and forced to bag-up drugs through debt-bondage or threats to injure or kill their loved ones.

Police carried out knife sweeps in St Leonards and visited a school this week as part of a campaign to tackle knife crime and violence.

Operation Sceptre was launched nationally on Monday (April 26) and aims to raise awareness of the dangers of carrying knives.
On Tuesday, police carried out knife sweeps in St Leonards where officers found a kitchen knife. A spokesman said the knife was ‘safely disposed of’.
Later the same day, officers also attended Robertsbridge Community College where they worked alongside school staff and members of the #KnowKnives team to ‘engage and educate’ students about the risks and potential consequences of carrying a knife.
