A federal ban on evictions has kept a roof over their heads. But that ban expires December 31st and with no real plan from local leaders. Less than half of Harris County’s $40 million rent relief program has been allocated to tenants in need of assistance, and county leaders will try to reallocate some of that money to the county’s rainy day fund before the end of the year, County Judge Lina Hidalgo’s office said.
A balance of some $26 million dollars remains leftover from the county’s CARES Act rent relief program managed by BakerRipley meaning just $14 million of the county’s allocated $40 million has been paid out.
On Tuesday, Harris County Commissioners Court plans to vote to reallocate $10 million of the remaining $26 million to the county’s Public Improvement Contingency Fund or rainy day fund which has been used for coronavirus relief, Hidalgo’s office said.

EL PASO, Texas Since the start of the pandemic, tens of thousands of people have lost their job in the Borderland community. For many, that loss of income impacted their ability to pay bills and especially, rent.
With an eviction moratorium expected to end in January, El Paso County Commissioner David Stout says an eviction tsunami is looming. I could imagine many folks who are in over their ears and once the moratorium is lifted, I m sure we are going to see landlords gong to court to evict people if they aren t able to pay, said Stout. And it s not just one months rent, it s a number of months rent that they will probably be on the hook for.
