Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has urged insurance firms to “follow through” on new personal injury guidelines and bring down costs.
New guidelines for damages in personal injury cases came into effect this weekend and reduced award levels may now apply for any cases that have not yet been assessed by the State’s awards body.
Justice Minister: Cap On Personal Injury Awards Could Be Introduced If New Guidelines Don t Bring Down Costs
They re set to reduce payouts for minor injuries by up to 50 per cent.
Minister Helen McEntee says the government could take action if the reforms don t go far enough: We have very much indicated that if we do not see a reduction in insurance costs then there are other options available to government. A piece of work has already been done looking at potentially capping awards, but I think we need to give everybody time here. The injuries guidelines are only coming into play today. It will take time for it to then filter through be it through the courts, be it through the Personal Injuries Assessment Board, be it through the insurance companies.
