CAPCOM revealed on Tuesday the results of its investigation on the ransomware attack on its network in November.
According to IT specialists, a cyberattack was carried out on an older backup Virtual Private Network (VPN) device that had been maintained at
CAPCOM s North American subsidiary, in October.
CAPCOM had already introduced a different, new model of VPN devices. However, the subsidiary kept one older VPN device as an emergency backup, due to burden on the company s network from the spread of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The older VPN device was the target of the attack, and has since been removed from the network.

A piece of legislation that recently passed the Lower House and was sent to the Upper House could significantly change the framework under which private information is handled.
The bill has raised a variety of concerns.
For example, it remains to be seen if privacy will be amply protected under the new system the central government is hoping to establish. There are also concerns the bill could bring to naught the accumulated efforts of local governments, which have long worked to ensure personal information is protected.
Gov t pushes for wider use of encrypted personal numbers on entry logs to protect privacy

The government has issued revised guidelines on handwritten entry logs required at small businesses such as restaurants for contact tracing purposes, as part of efforts to boost the use of encrypted personal numbers.
In February, the government rolled out the encrypted data service to better protect privacy, but it has been slow to take off, in part due to lack of public awareness.
The revised guidelines, released earlier this week, strongly recommend that people use their encrypted individual numbers, not their personal phone numbers, for visits to widely used business establishments, public offices and community centers. Businesses are allowed to skip identity checks on patrons to safeguard privacy.

The Japanese government has released the effective dates of substantial amendments to the Japanese Act on the Protection of Personal Information (“APPI”). The revised Act will fully come into effect on 1 April 2022. Provisions on increased penalties have been in force since December 2020 and restrictions on an “opt-out” exception will be effective from October 2021.
On 24 March 2021, the Japanese government released the effective dates of substantial amendments to the Japanese Act on the Protection of Personal Information (“APPI”) that had been announced in June 2020, requiring companies to take certain additional measures to protect personal data of data subjects.
