Tennesseeans are hosting 861 virtual or at-home celebrations during the Week. Among the biggest activities will be a statewide classroom photo contest and student video contest, with winners announced on Jan. 29. Tennessee s celebrations will also include Facebook Live Choice Chats with education experts throughout the Week. Taking place annually since 2011, School Choice Week is America s largest celebration of educational choice. While typically the Week is packed with large, in-person events, school choice advocates have adapted to this year s health and safety protocols, opting for drive through scavenger hunts, virtual information sessions and showcases, online contests, drive-in movie screenings, and more.

NYC To Launch Universal Mental Health Screening Initiative For Public Schoolchildren In Nine Months arrow Shutterstock In a move intended to address the trauma caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the city plans to launch a mental health screening initiative for public school students, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday. The initiative will assess students mental well-being at schools in 27 hardest-hit neighborhoods severely impacted by the pandemic, according to de Blasio. Students will first be evaluated through a five-minute questionnaire, with questions that will include a student s thoughts and feelings, their perspective on schools, and relationships with friends and family. The neighborhoods include East Tremont, Bushwick, Queensbridge, Stapleton, and Washington Heights, which are largely Black and Brown communities.
