On top of that, cancer patients are having a tougher time than ever trying to access treatment in a timely and safe manner. This first piece, featuring Wanda Brekken, was submitted by members of the Albert and Wanda Brekken family.     Wanda Brekken was born Wanda Irene Pester in 1920 in Grand Forks, North Dakota.  She was the youngest of six children born to Henry and Elizabeth Pester.  Wanda had three older sisters, Marion, Margaret and Dorothy, and two older brothers, Harlan and Charles.  She spent her early years on a farm in Johnstown ND and grew up in the depression.  She didn t have a lot of clothes and didn t get hand-me-downs from her sisters as the clothes were worn out by the time, she could fit into them.  The family moved to Crookston around 1

The Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s is giving participants the option this year to walk when you want, how you want and where you want. Executive Director at the Alzheimer’s Society Vicki Poffley, says their hoping to exceed last years total of $53,000 and residents can make that happen by walking or simply donating. Participants can walk when they want, how they want, and where they want anytime in May. The goal is to take at least one step in support of each one of the 4300 people living with dementia in KFL&A, their caregivers and their families. You might choose to walk that many steps in one day, or once every week in May, or even once a day throughout the month of May!

Local Student Ambassadors Raise Funds For Purple Community The Van Andel Institute s Student Ambassador Virtual Silent Auction is underway and is raising money for the institute s Purple Community. The student program was put in place in 2019 to give real world experience to West Michigan students interested in philanthropy and fundraising. Students from the following districts are participants in this year s program: Caledonia High School, Grand Rapids Catholic Central, Forest Hills Northern High School, East Grand Rapids High School, Holland Christian High School, Cedar Springs High School, Wayland Union, West Michigan Aviation Academy, Otsego High School, Grand Rapids Christian High School, and Grand Rapids Public City High School.
